Turkish vocabulary exercises: translations, gaps and short sentences
Practise recognising meanings, selecting a word in context and answering independently. These learning exercises do not establish your level or replace a vocabulary assessment.
How to work through the exercises
Attempt each task without hints, then open the key. Check whether you forgot a meaning, chose the wrong form or misunderstood the task. If your answer differs, check whether its meaning and form fit the sentence.
Recognise the meaning
Match pencere, yarın, soru, şehir with “city”, “question”, “window” and “tomorrow”.
Answer key
pencere — window; yarın — tomorrow; soru — question; şehir — city.
Choose a word in a sentence
- ___ nerede? Choose “water”: su / yol / okul.
- Bir çay, ___. Choose the polite word: lütfen / yarın / büyük.
- Yarın ___. Choose “I am coming”: geliyorum / pencere / kim.
Answers and explanations
1. Su: asking where the water is. 2. lütfen: a polite request. 3. geliyorum: this is a form of the verb “to come”. The other options mean “window” and “who”.
Recall without a hint
Translate “Where is the school?”, “One tea, please” and “What is this?”.
Possible answers
Okul nerede?; Bir çay, lütfen.; Bu ne? Other appropriate conversational variants are possible; these are simple models.
Make your own response
Choose a place, object or drink and make a sentence using ___ nerede? or Bir ___, lütfen. Then, for an extra task, start a sentence with Bugün (“today”) and describe an activity. You will need a verb in the right form. Check your sentence, then say it without notes.
Reviewing difficulties
If you could not remember a meaning, return to A1 topics or the 100 starter words. If you recognise a word but cannot use it, write a sentence about your own life using the word and review it later. You can also take the vocabulary test as an approximate reference, bearing in mind its limits.
Common questions
Why use different types of exercise?
They practise recognition, selection in context and independent recall. You may find that you remember a translation but still need practice building a sentence.
What if my answer is not in the key?
Check its meaning and form in context with a dictionary or teacher. Open questions can allow more than one answer.
Does a high score mean a high level?
No. This is a short learning exercise, not a CEFR assessment or language examination.
