100 Turkish words for beginners: meanings, examples and first phrases

This is a learning selection, not a ranking of the hundred most frequent words. Its 100 entries cover first conversations: greetings, people, home, food, time, questions and actions. Study them in small groups with their examples.

How to use the list

A noun names a person or thing; verbs are given in their dictionary form; adjectives describe things. Read the Turkish spelling, then the example, then the meaning. Do not learn all hundred at once: choose one group, make two sentences of your own and return to it later.

Building your first phrases

Use a short model and change one element instead of translating every word literally:

Recall without a hint

  1. Translate pencere, yarın and kaç.
  2. Complete “Where is the water?”: Su ___?
  3. Ask politely for one tea.
Answers

1. window; tomorrow; how many. 2. nerede. 3. Bir çay, lütfen.

Next, choose vocabulary for your goal and learn how to review it in context.

Common questions

Are these really the 100 most frequent words?

No. This is a starter selection for early situations. A frequency ranking needs a specified corpus and selection method.

Should I learn all hundred before speaking?

No. Start with one group and use it in a short sentence. Speaking practice can begin before you finish the list.

Why does yemek have two meanings?

Depending on context it can mean “food, meal” or “to eat”. Learn each meaning with an example rather than one fixed translation.
