Active and passive Turkish vocabulary: start using words you recognise
Recognising a word while reading and quickly producing it in conversation are different tasks. Moving towards active use calls for recall in context, not just a longer list.
Two ways of knowing a word
Passive vocabulary consists of words you recognise in a text or familiar phrase. Active vocabulary contains words you can select and use yourself. The boundary is flexible: a word may be active at a café but passive when discussing the past.

Why cards do not always become speech
A card usually supplies one cue: a Turkish word or its translation. Conversation requires understanding the situation, choosing a meaning and form, and saying a sentence. Follow cards with questions, substitutions and personal responses.
A four-step cycle
- Read the word in a short sentence and understand its role.
- Hide the translation and recall the meaning.
- Hide the Turkish word and recover it from the situation.
- Change one element to make the sentence personal.
Bugün çay içiyorum. — “I am drinking tea today.”
Substitute: Bugün su içiyorum.
Your response: name your drink or activity after checking the form.
Choosing words to activate
Do not tackle the entire list at once. Choose 5–8 words for introductions, home, food or travel. Make two personal sentences, say them without notes and return to them a few days later.
Use A1 vocabulary for your set and spaced repetition for a review routine.
A quick check
Without looking at a translation, ask “Where is the water?” and make a request using Bir ___, lütfen.
Possible answers
Su nerede? and, for example, Bir çay, lütfen. Change the second sentence to fit your situation.
Common questions
Must I wait until a word is passively familiar?
No. Try a short personal sentence from the beginning while building recognition.
How many words should I activate at once?
A small thematic set that you have time to recall and use without hints.
Does this replace grammar?
No. Models highlight forms, while grammar and feedback help you speak more accurately.
