Spaced repetition for Turkish words: build a flexible review schedule
Spaced repetition brings you back to a word before it slips away completely. A schedule helps when you try to recall meaning and use, rather than merely flip through familiar cards.
How review intervals work
A newly encountered word is easier to recall immediately than later. Reviewing on different days creates more opportunities to retrieve it. Adjust the intervals according to how confidently you recall each word.
A flexible starting schedule
| When | Task | If you struggle |
|---|---|---|
| First day | Meaning and one sentence | Simplify the example |
| Next day | Recall without the translation | Return to the sentence |
| After 3–4 days | Choose it in a new sentence | Add a contrasting example |
| After 1–2 weeks | Make your own response | Reduce the set and review sooner |
This is an example schedule, not a precise formula for memory. If you miss a week, do not punish yourself with a hundred cards. Return to a small set of difficult words.
Making a useful card
Add context to a meaning: anahtar — key; Anahtar nerede? — “Where is the key?” Vary the direction: word → meaning, meaning → word, situation → short sentence.
Understanding errors
Record the cause: forgotten meaning, confusion between similar words, unfamiliar form or pronunciation difficulty. Each calls for a different next step. Separate distinct meanings into cards with their own examples.
What to combine with review
After a short session, read two sentences, ask a question or describe an object. Otherwise, the set may remain a collection of cards. See active vocabulary and the practice exercises for ideas.
Common questions
Do I need a special app?
No. A notebook or calendar works. An app is convenient but cannot replace trying to recall.
What should I do with a difficult word?
Simplify the context, shorten the interval and check whether several meanings have been combined.
Can I learn through cards alone?
Cards support review, but add reading, listening and sentences of your own.
Check your vocabulary
An approximate estimate of Turkish word recognition from a sample. The test does not establish an A1–C2 level or replace an examination.
