Turkish restaurant phrases: order a meal and understand the reply

Start with a greeting, a short order and a way to ask for repetition. At a Turkish restaurant, understanding the question you are asked is just as useful as remembering the name of your dish. The phrases below take you through one visit.

From the door to the menu

TurkishMeaning or use
İki kişilik bir masa var mı?Is there a table for two?
Rezervasyonum var.I have a reservation.
Menüyü alabilir miyim?May I have the menu?
Pardon, bakar mısınız?Excuse me; could you help me?

The first question includes the number of people. For a different party size, change iki to üç or dört. Bakar mısınız? is a polite way to attract attention; its literal wording is less useful to memorise than its purpose in this situation.

Place a simple order

A short noun phrase with lütfen is enough for a simple order. Learn one flexible request, such as alabilir miyim?, rather than translating a new English sentence word by word each time. Acı can refer to a hot or bitter taste depending on the food: context matters.

Recognise the reply

TurkishMeaning or use
Kaç kişisiniz? How many of you are there?
Ne içmek istersiniz? What would you like to drink?
Başka bir şey ister misiniz?Would you like anything else?
Afiyet olsun.Enjoy your meal.

You can answer the last offer with Hayır, teşekkür ederim: no, thank you. If you miss the question, say Tekrar eder misiniz? — could you repeat that? A request for repetition is more useful than pretending you understood.

A short practice conversation

This is an original learning dialogue, not a transcript from a restaurant.

Read both roles, hide the English and change the drink. Then answer without seeing the Turkish customer line. This tests whether you can respond to a question instead of only repeating a list.

Ask for the bill

These are requests, not guarantees about what a particular restaurant accepts. If the answer contains a word you do not know, ask for clarification before paying.

Try it without the translation

Ask for a table for three, order one soup, and decline an additional item.

Answers and explanation

Üç kişilik bir masa var mı? Bir çorba, lütfen. Hayır, teşekkür ederim. Change the number of people, not the rest of the table request.

Keep practising

Practise Turkish words as useful phrases. Then try the vocabulary self-check if you want a broader reference point. Its questions are drawn from a small general word bank, so it is not a test of this lesson or a measure of your speaking level.

Common questions

Does acı always mean spicy?

No. It can describe a hot or bitter taste, and has other meanings outside food. Learn it with the item being described.

Should I call out garson?

Pardon, bakar mısınız? is a useful polite request for attention. Tone and the situation also matter.

Check your vocabulary
