Turkish directions and transport vocabulary

Use nerede to ask where something is and nereye to ask where someone is going. That distinction helps you connect a destination with the right question. Start with one place and a few direction words before trying to memorise a whole city map.

Ask for a place

In Buraya nasıl gidebilirim?, show the place you mean on a map. Here refers to that indicated destination. Without the map or another clear reference, the listener may not know which location you mean.

Understand a short route

TurkishMeaning or use
sağ / solright / left
düzstraight
yakın / uzaknear / far
Sağa dönün.Turn right.
Sola dönün.Turn left.
Düz gidin.Go straight.

Sağ names the direction, while sağa means towards the right. The ending in dönün gives the instruction a polite or plural form. Focus first on recognising the direction. You do not need to produce a long route description to understand a short one.

At a stop or station

TurkishMeaning or use
biletticket
durakstop
istasyonstation
otobüs / tren / metrobus / train / metro
Tek yön bilet istiyorum.I want a one-way ticket.
Hangi durakta ineceğim?At which stop should I get off?

The ticket sentence is language practice, not a description of a particular transport system. Ticket types, payment methods and routes vary. Ask locally or check the operator’s current information for an actual journey.

When the answer is too fast

Repeat the crucial detail: Sağa mı? — to the right? This is often easier than asking the speaker to repeat every word. Then check the place name, since a correctly understood direction to the wrong destination is still unhelpful.

Try it without the translation

Choose nerede or nereye: “Where is the station?” and “Where are you going?” Then translate “Turn left”.

Answers and explanation

İstasyon nerede? Nereye gidiyorsunuz? Sola dönün. The first question asks for a location; the second asks for a destination.

Keep practising

Review Turkish spelling before reading place names aloud. Then try the vocabulary self-check if you want a broader reference point. Its questions are drawn from a small general word bank, so it is not a test of this lesson or a measure of your speaking level.

Common questions

Are nerede and nereye interchangeable?

No. Nerede asks at what location; nereye asks towards what destination.

Does this include current tickets and fares?

No. It teaches the language of a journey; consult the relevant operator for current service information.

Check your vocabulary
